川芎於性味歸經屬辛，溫，口感稍有麻舌感，微回甜，歸肝、膽、心包經。川芎通常曬後烘乾，再去鬚根，切片或酒炒使用，可活血行氣，祛風止痛。Chuanxiong is also commonly found in the Siwu Decoction that women often drink.
